What is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is an Physiotherapy related, exercise-based program designed by a specialty-trained vestibular physiotherapist. The aim of vestibular rehabilitation is to help improve a patient’s balance and reduce problems related to dizziness, helping to reduce or eliminate balance issues.
Did you know that up to 40% of Irish people suffer from conditions such as chronic dizziness, Vertigo or disequilibrium?
What conditions does Vestibular Rehabilitation treat?
Though patients who suffer from dizziness are predominantly over the 75 bracket, it is not only older people who suffer with this issue. There are a wide range of reasons as to why people may suffer from dizziness or loss of balance.
Some of the most common reasons for dizziness or loss of balance are:
- side effect of certain medications
- neck disfunction
- inner ear disorder
- neurological conditions
- heart problem
Some conditions such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s Disease, post ear surgery, Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis are known to lead to vestibular problems.
How Can Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy help me?
At your first appointment a highly trained physiotherapist will conduct a full balance assessment to determine the extent of your symptoms. An individual treatment plan will be designed to deal with your diagnosis and to help to fight the aggravation that the vestibular system is under. This in turn will reduce symptoms leading to an enhanced quality of life.
