What is Sports Massage?
Here at Revive Physiotherapy we have two options for massages, Deep Tissue Massage or Sports Massage. Both massages are hands on manipulation of muscles, however with sports we massage in a certain area to treat specific concerns, usually a sports or repetitive strain injury. These massages are also used as a pre-event technique to warm up muscles by boosting blood flow and increasing circulation. Many athletes utilise sports massages either directly prior to an event or in the weeks leading up to an event (such as marathon training or an All Ireland Final).
Massages can increase the elasticity of the tissue, meaning the muscles are more relaxed and the likelihood of injury decreases. They are also proven to reduce and release tension in the soft tissue. Massages can encourage the release of waste products such as lactic acid which builds up during high intensity activity.
Sports Massage v Deep Tissue Massage
You might be wondering about the difference between the two types of massages we offer. A Deep Tissue Massage targets the areas around the muscle whereas Sports Massages target the soft tissue. If you have general aches, pain or tension then a Deep Tissue Massage is the option you should choose. However, if you have specific areas of pain, repetitive strain or sprains that have built up over time or you have a sports injury, then the sports massage will be most beneficial. If you are still unsure which massage to book then you can contact us to help you make an informed decision.
